What this is
The chara karakas come from Jaimini's system, and the method is a single sentence: look at how many degrees into its sign each graha stands, ignore which sign, and put them in order from the highest degree down. The graha at the top is the Atmakaraka, the one at the bottom of the eight is the Darakaraka, and the six names between them are fixed. There is no strength model and nothing to weigh up — it is a ranking.
Two details divide practitioners, and this page prints its choice on both rather than leaving you to guess why another site gave you a different answer. Rahu is included, giving eight karakas rather than seven; and Rahu's degree is reversed, thirty minus its own, because it travels backwards. The table shows the printed degree and the ranked number side by side, so where Rahu sits in the order is visible arithmetic rather than something happening off the page.
Common questions
-
What does the Atmakaraka mean? Show the answer
Classically it is read as the graha standing for the self — the strongest single significator of the person in the chart, and a starting point for a Jaimini reading rather than a conclusion. What it means in a particular life is a judgement made from the whole chart: which sign and house it falls in, what sits with it, what the rest of the chart says. This page gives you which graha holds the position and the working behind it. It does not tell you what your purpose is, and any site that does so from this one fact is telling you more than the fact supports.
-
Does the Darakaraka describe my future spouse? Show the answer
It is the karaka classically associated with the spouse, and Jaimini astrologers do read it when looking at marriage — alongside the seventh house, its lord, Venus and much else. The step from "your Darakaraka is Mercury" to a description of a person is an interpretation, made by an astrologer from a whole chart, and it is not one this page will make for you. We compute the ranking and say what the term refers to.

Why does another site give me a different Darakaraka? Show the answer
Almost always one of three reasons, and all three are named on the result page. The other site may exclude Rahu and rank seven grahas, which moves every name below Rahu's place. It may measure Rahu forwards rather than reversed. Or it may order the fifth and sixth names differently, which relabels two rows without changing the ranking. A fourth possibility is a different ayanamsa, which only matters when two grahas are within a fraction of a degree of each other.
