What this is
Vimshottari is the dasha system most Vedic astrologers work with. It divides a 120-year cycle among the nine grahas in fixed proportions — Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 — and the order never changes. Which graha you begin with, and how far into its period you were born, is decided by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth.
Most software prints this as a table of dates. This page draws it as one timeline from birth to 120 years, so the whole sequence is visible at once: how long each mahadasha runs, where today falls inside it, and which antardasha is running. Every period is calculated from your own Moon position rather than looked up in a table.
Common questions
-
What is the difference between a mahadasha and an antardasha? Show the answer
A mahadasha is the main period — Saturn runs 19 years, the Moon 10. Each is divided into nine antardashas in the same proportions and the same order, so a Saturn mahadasha opens with Saturn-Saturn and passes through all nine. This page shows both levels.
-
Why does my dasha start on a different date elsewhere? Show the answer
The starting point is the fraction of your birth nakshatra the Moon had already crossed, so it is sensitive to both the birth time and the ayanamsa. A few minutes can move the first period's end date by weeks. This page prints the Moon longitude it used, so the two can be compared.
-
Does a period tell me what will happen? Show the answer
No, and this site does not claim otherwise. A dasha is a stretch of time classical astrology associates with a graha and the parts of life that graha is connected with. It is a frame for looking at a period, not a forecast of events.
