What this is
Mangal Dosha — being Manglik — is one rule and nothing more: Mars occupying the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from a reference point. Most traditions count from the lagna, many also count from the Moon, and some count from Venus as well, which is why the same chart is called Manglik by one astrologer and not by another. The houses are the same everywhere; what differs is where you start counting.
This page counts from all three and shows each result, rather than picking the one that gives the more dramatic answer. It also prints the exceptions the classical texts set beside the rule — Mars in a sign it rules or is exalted in, Jupiter with it or aspecting it, and the house-and-sign pairs the texts exempt — with a yes or no for each against your chart. What it will not do is turn any of that into a statement about a marriage.
Common questions
-
Why does one site call me Manglik and another not? Show the answer
Almost always the reference point. Counting from the lagna and counting from the Moon give different house numbers unless the two happen to coincide, and a site that counts from only one of them will disagree with a site that counts from the other. A few traditions also exclude the 2nd house. This page shows all three counts and names the six houses, so you can see exactly which reading produced which answer.
-
What are the exceptions? Show the answer
The texts set out conditions under which Mars in one of those houses is not read as forming the condition: Mars in Mesha or Vrischika, which it rules, or in Makara, where it is exalted; Jupiter placed with Mars or casting its aspect on it; and particular house-and-sign pairs, such as Mars in the 12th in a sign of Venus. Different traditions carry different lists. This page prints the set that appears most consistently, with whether each one holds for your chart.
-
Does this decide whether a marriage should go ahead? Show the answer
No, and this site will not answer that question. Mangal Dosha is a position in a chart. What people do with it is a decision for them and for whoever they choose to consult, and a calculator is not in a position to make it. This page gives you the position, the rule and the exceptions, and stops there.
