Sade Sati, explained: how the dates are worked out, and whose is running now

Sade Sati is Saturn's passage over three signs around your Moon. What decides when yours starts and ends, why it often runs longer than seven and a half years, and which Moon signs are in it today.

Few terms in Vedic astrology come with as heavy a reputation as Sade Sati (साढ़े साती). People hear the word before they know what it means. It helps to start with what it actually is, because the definition is simple and the dates can be worked out exactly.

What Sade Sati is

Sade sati means "seven and a half". It is the stretch of time during which Saturn moves through three signs:

  1. the sign before your Moon sign,
  2. your Moon sign itself, and
  3. the sign after it.

Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross one sign, so three signs take about seven and a half years — hence the name.

Two things in that definition matter more than people expect:

  • It is counted from your Moon sign (rashi), not your Sun sign. Two people born on the same day can have different Moon signs, because the Moon changes sign every two and a half days or so.
  • It is about where Saturn is in the sky now, compared with where your Moon was at birth. It is a transit (gochar), not something fixed in your chart.

The three phases

Each sign Saturn crosses is treated as a phase of its own, and they are usually named:

  • Rising phase — Saturn in the sign before your Moon sign;
  • Peak phase — Saturn over your Moon sign;
  • Setting phase — Saturn in the sign after it.

Traditional texts describe each phase as bringing attention to different areas of life, and astrologers read them against the rest of the chart — above all, Saturn's own placement at birth and the Dasha period running at the time. The same transit is read differently in different charts.

Why it often lasts longer than seven and a half years

For a few months every year, Saturn appears to move backwards (retrograde). When that happens near a sign boundary, Saturn can leave a sign, return to it, and leave again. Sade Sati starts on Saturn's first entry into the first sign and ends on its final exit from the third — so a boundary crossed three times adds months to the total.

A real example, calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa: for anyone with the Moon in Kumbha (Aquarius), Sade Sati began when Saturn entered Makara on 24 January 2020. Saturn is now in Meena, the third sign, and leaves it on 3 June 2027 — but it turns back and re-enters Meena on 20 October 2027, and only leaves for good on 23 February 2028. That Sade Sati runs just over eight years, not seven and a half.

It comes round more than once

Saturn takes about 29½ years to go all the way round the zodiac, so Sade Sati returns roughly every 30 years. Most people go through it two or three times in a lifetime — often once in childhood or youth, once in middle age, and once later on. Each one is read on its own terms; what the first one coincided with says nothing fixed about the next.

The two dhaiyas

Alongside Sade Sati, tradition also marks two shorter stretches of about two and a half years each, called dhaiya (ढैया, "two and a half") or small panoti:

  • Saturn in the 4th sign from your Moon sign (sometimes called kantaka shani), and
  • Saturn in the 8th sign from your Moon sign (ashtama shani).

They are worked out the same way — from your Moon sign and Saturn's actual dates — and listed alongside Sade Sati for the same reason.

Who is in Sade Sati now

Saturn entered Meena (Pisces) on 29 March 2025 and stays there until 3 June 2027 (and again from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028). While it is there:

Moon signWhere Saturn isPhase
Kumbha (Aquarius)the sign after itsetting
Meena (Pisces)over itpeak
Mesha (Aries)the sign before itrising
Dhanu (Sagittarius)the 4th sign from itdhaiya
Simha (Leo)the 8th sign from itdhaiya

For Makara (Capricorn) Moons, Sade Sati ended when Saturn left Kumbha on 29 March 2025.

All dates here are calculated from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same way the rest of this site calculates. A source using a different ayanamsa can put a sign change days or weeks away from these.

Knowing your own dates

Because it depends only on your Moon sign and Saturn's movement, your Sade Sati dates can be worked out exactly, for your whole life, as soon as your Moon sign is known. The Sade Sati page lists every one in your life — past, current and to come — with the start and end of each of its three phases and both dhaiyas, taken from your own chart. If you do not have a chart yet, it takes about a minute to create one.

A Sade Sati is a stretch of time to be read, not a sentence to be served. Knowing exactly when it starts and ends, and which phase you are in, is usually the most useful thing to have before reading anything more into it.
