About the Hanuman Chalisa

The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Hanuman, the devoted servant of Shri Ram. It was written by Goswami Tulsidas, the poet of the Ramcharitmanas, in the 16th century, in Awadhi, a form of Hindi.

“Chalisa” comes from chalis, forty: the hymn has forty verses of four short lines (chaupais), framed by two couplets (dohas) at the start and one at the end. It recalls Hanuman’s strength, wisdom and devotion, and the deeds told in the Ramayana: finding Sita in Lanka, bringing the Sanjeevani herb for Lakshman, and serving Ram.

Many people read it every day, and especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days tradition keeps for Hanuman. A calm reading takes about ten minutes. It can be read silently or aloud, alone or with family.
