About the Lakshmi Chalisa

The Lakshmi Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Goddess Lakshmi, written in simple Hindi. Its author is not known for certain; the closing dohas carry the name Ramdas, the devotee who offers the prayer.

“Chalisa” comes from chalis, forty, for its forty or so verses. This text has thirty-nine chaupais, the last in the name of Ramdas, and two closing dohas; some editions also open with a doha, a soratha and one more chaupai. It praises Lakshmi as the daughter of the ocean who rose at its churning, the consort of Vishnu who comes with him in each of his descents, and the mother who looks after those who call on her.

Many people read it on Fridays, the day tradition keeps for Lakshmi, through the month of Kartik, on Sharad Purnima, and in the evening of Diwali. A calm reading takes about ten minutes. It can be read silently or aloud, alone or with family.
