About the Shiv Chalisa

The Shiv Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Lord Shiva. It was written in simple Hindi by the poet Ayodhyadas, who names himself in the opening doha and in the last chaupai; the final doha says it was completed on the sixth day of Margashirsha, in the Hemant season, in “samvat sixty-four”.

“Chalisa” comes from chalis, forty: the hymn has forty chaupais, opened by a doha and closed by the poet’s own line and two dohas. It praises Shiva’s form — the moon on his brow, the Ganga in his hair, the trident in his hand — and recalls his deeds: drinking the poison from the churning of the ocean, which made him Neelkanth, and protecting the gods from the demons.

Many people read it on Mondays, the day tradition keeps for Shiva, during the month of Shravan, and on Mahashivratri. A calm reading takes about ten minutes. It can be read silently or aloud, alone or with family.
