What this is

Gochar is where the grahas are now, read against the chart you were born with. The fast movers change sign in days or weeks; the slow ones are the reason the subject exists. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign, Jupiter about one, and Rahu and Ketu about eighteen months, moving backwards through the zodiac.

This page places the slow grahas today relative to your natal Moon, counting houses from the Moon rather than the lagna, which is the classical way to read gochar. It marks Sade Sati — the roughly seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the twelfth, first and second houses from the Moon — with the dates of each of its three phases, and shows where those dates came from.

Common questions

  • What is Sade Sati, exactly? Show the answer

Saturn moving through three signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. Saturn takes about two and a half years over each, so the passage runs about seven and a half years and comes round roughly every thirty. This page gives the dates for your own chart. The classical texts describe it as a demanding period; this site treats it as a stretch of time to know about, and says nothing about what to do concerning it.

  • Should transits be read from the Moon or from the lagna? Show the answer

Both are used. The classical rule for gochar counts from the Moon sign, which is what this page does, and many astrologers read from the lagna as well. Where the two differ, neither is wrong — they answer slightly different questions.

  • Why do the dates differ from another site? Show the answer

The ayanamsa again, and whether retrograde motion is accounted for. Saturn is retrograde for several months a year, so it can cross a sign boundary, go back over it and cross again. This page uses the actual ephemeris positions rather than average dates.
