What this is

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so the line between them cuts the zodiac in half. Kaal Sarp is the name given to the arrangement in which all seven of the other grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of that line. One graha on the other side and the arrangement is not formed. That is the whole rule.

This page measures each graha as an arc forward from Rahu and shows you the number, so you can see how close the chart is either way. Where the arrangement is formed it also gives the direction — towards Ketu or the reverse — and the name that goes with the house Rahu occupies. And it tells you something most calculators leave out: where this rule comes from, and that it is disputed.

Common questions

  • Is Kaal Sarp in the classical texts? Show the answer

Not under this name. It does not appear in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or the other standard classical works, and astrologers who work closely from those texts often say so. It became widespread in the twentieth century and is now in common use. Both of those things are true at once, and a calculator that shows you the first without mentioning the second is not telling you the whole story.

  • What if one graha is just outside? Show the answer

Then the arrangement is not formed, on the plain reading of the rule. Some practitioners call a near miss partial; there is no agreed definition of how near counts. This page gives you the arc of every graha in degrees rather than a yes or no, so you can see whether a chart is comfortably clear of it or a degree away — which is a more useful thing to know than either label.

  • What are the twelve names? Show the answer

Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhchud, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag, taken in order of the house Rahu occupies counting from the lagna. They come from modern practice rather than a classical enumeration, and different sources order or spell them differently.
