What this is
Guna Milan, or Ashtakoota, compares two charts on eight counts and scores each out of a fixed maximum — Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8 — adding to 36. Nearly all of it is computed from the two Moon positions: the nakshatra each Moon falls in, and the sign it occupies.
This page shows each of the eight kootas separately, with the value found on both sides and the rule that produced the score, not only the total. That matters, because two pairs with the same number out of 36 can arrive there in completely different ways. The site reports the score and the working and leaves the conclusion to the people involved and whoever they choose to consult.
Common questions
-
What counts as a good score? Show the answer
Traditionally 18 out of 36 and above is treated as workable, and higher as better. But the total hides as much as it shows: Nadi alone is worth 8 points and Bhakoot 7, so two charts can lose 15 points on two counts and sit well on the other six. Reading the breakdown is the whole reason it is shown.
-
Does this replace an astrologer? Show the answer
No. Guna Milan is one tool among several, and most astrologers also look at the seventh house, the placement of Mars and the running dashas of both people. This page computes the classical eight-koota comparison accurately and shows its working. It does not give a verdict.

Do I need both birth times? Show the answer
Both dates, times and places give the full comparison. Seven of the eight kootas depend only on the Moon, which moves about one degree every two hours, so approximate times still give a usable result — but when a Moon sits near the edge of a nakshatra, a small error can change several scores at once.
