About Chapter 16, Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

Chapter 16, Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga, sets out two kinds of nature. The divine nature is fearlessness, purity of heart, generosity, self-control, truth, freedom from anger, kindness to all beings, forgiveness and modesty; it leads to freedom. Krishna tells Arjuna not to grieve, for he is born with it (shlokas 1–5).

The demonic nature is hypocrisy, arrogance, anger and harshness: people who say the world has no God, chase endless desires, pile up wealth by unjust means and think “I am the lord, I am the enjoyer”; it leads to bondage (6–20). Desire, anger and greed are the three gates of hell, to be given up, and scripture is the guide to what should and should not be done (21–24).

A calm reading of all 24 shlokas with their meanings takes about ten minutes.

Bhavanti sampadam daivim abhijatasya bharata

vigour, forgiveness, patience, purity, freedom from malice and from excessive pride: these belong to one born with the divine nature, Bharata.

Shloka 16.4

Dambho darpo ’bhimanash cha krodhah parushyam eva cha

Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harshness and ignorance belong to one born with the demonic nature, son of Pritha.

Shloka 16.5

Daivi sampad vimokshaya nibandhayasuri mata
Ma shuchah sampadam daivim abhijato ’si pandava

The divine nature leads to freedom, the demonic to bondage. Do not grieve, Pandava: you are born with the divine nature.

The demonic nature 16.6–16.20

Shloka 16.6

Dvau bhuta-sargau loke ’smin daiva asura eva cha
Daivo vistarashah prokta asuram partha me shrinu

There are two kinds of beings in this world, the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described in detail; now hear from me about the demonic, son of Pritha.

Shloka 16.7

People of demonic nature do not know what to do and what to refrain from. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truth is found in them.

Shloka 16.8

Asatyam apratishtham te jagad ahur anishvaram
Aparaspara-sambhutam kim anyat kama-haitukam

They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without a God, produced by chance union, with nothing but desire as its cause.

Shloka 16.9

Etam drishtim avashtabhya nashtatmano ’lpa-buddhayah
Prabhavanty ugra-karmanah kshayaya jagato ’hitah

Holding this view, these lost souls of small understanding and cruel deeds rise up as enemies of the world, for its destruction.

Shloka 16.10

Kamam ashritya dushpuram dambha-mana-madanvitah
Mohad grihitvasad-grahan pravartante ’shuchi-vratah

Clinging to insatiable desire, full of hypocrisy, pride and arrogance, holding wrong ideas out of delusion, they act with impure resolves.

Shloka 16.11

Chintam aparimeyam cha pralayantam upashritah
Kamopabhoga-parama etavad iti nishchitah

Taken over by endless worries that last until death, holding the enjoyment of desires as the highest aim, certain that this is all there is,

Shloka 16.12

Asha-pasha-shatair baddhah kama-krodha-parayanah
Ihante kama-bhogartham anyayenartha-sanchayan

bound by hundreds of ropes of hope, given over to desire and anger, they strive to pile up wealth by unjust means for the enjoyment of their desires.

Shloka 16.13

Idam adya maya labdham imam prapsye manoratham
Idam astidam api me bhavishyati punar dhanam

“This I have gained today; this wish I shall fulfil. This wealth is mine, and more will be mine too.

Shloka 16.14

Asau maya hatah shatrur hanishye chaparan api
Ishvaro ’ham aham bhogi siddho ’ham balavan sukhi

That enemy I have killed, and I shall kill others too. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am successful, strong and happy.

Shloka 16.15

Adhyo ’bhijanavan asmi ko ’nyo ’sti sadrisho maya yakshye dasyami modishya ity ajnana-vimohitah
Aneka-chitta-vibhranta moha-jala-samavritah prasaktah kama-bhogeshu patanti narake ’shuchau

I am rich and well-born; who else is like me? I shall perform rites, I shall give, I shall rejoice,” so they think, deluded by ignorance.

Shloka 16.16

Aneka-citta-vibhranta moha-jala-samavritah
Prasaktah kama-bhogeshu patanti narake ’shucau

Bewildered by many thoughts, caught in the net of delusion, addicted to the enjoyment of desires, they fall into a foul hell.

Shloka 16.17

Atma-sambhavitah stabdha dhana-mana-madanvitah
Yajante nama-yajnais te dambhenavidhi-purvakam

Self-important, stubborn, filled with the pride and intoxication of wealth, they perform rites in name only, with hypocrisy and not by the rules.

Shloka 16.18

Ahankaram balam darpam kamam krodham cha sanshritah
Mam atma-para-deheshu pradvishanto ’bhyasuyakah

Given over to ego, force, arrogance, desire and anger, these envious people hate me, who dwell in their own bodies and in the bodies of others.

Shloka 16.19

Tan aham dvishatah kruran sansareshu naradhaman
Kshipamy ajasram ashubhan asurishv eva yonishu

These hateful, cruel, lowest of people, doers of harm, I cast again and again into demonic wombs in the cycle of births.

Shloka 16.20

Asurim yonim apanna mudha janmani janmani
Mam aprapyaiva kaunteya tato yanty adhamam gatim

Falling into demonic wombs birth after birth, the deluded, never reaching me, son of Kunti, go down to the lowest state.

The three gates, and scripture as guide 16.21–16.24

Shloka 16.21

Tri-vidham narakasyedam dvaram nashanam atmanah
Kamah krodhas tatha lobhas tasmad etat trayam tyajet

Desire, anger and greed: these are the three gates of hell that destroy the self. So one should give up these three.

Shloka 16.22

Etair vimuktah kaunteya tamo-dvarais tribhir narah
Acharaty atmanah shreyas tato yati param gatim

A person freed from these three gates of darkness, son of Kunti, does what is good for the self, and so reaches the highest goal.

Shloka 16.23

Yah shastra-vidhim utsrijya vartate kama-karatah

One who sets aside the guidance of scripture and acts on the impulse of desire reaches neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the highest goal.

Shloka 16.24

Tasmach chhastram pramanam te karyakarya-vyavasthitau
Jnatva shastra-vidhanoktam karma kartum iharhasi

So let scripture be your guide in deciding what should and should not be done. Knowing what scripture teaches, you should do your work here.
