About Chapter 6, Atma Samyama Yoga
Chapter 6, Atma Samyama Yoga (the yoga of self-control), is often called Dhyana Yoga, the yoga of meditation. Krishna begins by saying that the true renunciate is the one who works without depending on the fruit, and that each person must lift themselves up: the self is its own friend and its own enemy (shlokas 1–9).
He then describes how to meditate: a quiet, clean place, a firm seat, the body straight and still, the mind on him, and balance in eating, sleep and work. The steady mind is “like a lamp in a windless place” (10–23). The mind is brought back gently each time it wanders, until one sees the same Self in all beings (24–32). Arjuna says the mind is as hard to hold as the wind; Krishna agrees, and answers that it is held by practice (abhyasa) and letting go (vairagya) (33–36). Last, Arjuna asks what happens to one who falls from the path before reaching the goal. Krishna says no one who does good comes to a bad end (37–47).
A calm reading of all 47 shlokas with their meanings takes about twenty minutes.

Shri Krishna said
Anashritah karma-phalam karyam karma karoti yah
One who does the work that should be done without depending on its fruit is a true renunciate and a true yogi; not one who merely gives up the sacred fire or stops all activity.
Yam sannyasam iti prahur yogam tam viddhi pandava
Na hyasannyasta-sankalpo yogi bhavati kashchana
What they call renunciation, know that to be yoga, Pandava, for no one becomes a yogi without giving up selfish intentions.
Arurukshor muner yogam karma karanam uchyate
Yogarudhasya tasyaiva shamah karanam uchyate
For the sage who wants to climb to yoga, action is said to be the means. For the same person, once established in yoga, calm is said to be the means.
Yada hi nendriyartheshu na karmasv-anushajjate
Sarva-sankalpa-sannyasi yogarudhas tadochyate
When one is no longer attached to sense objects or to actions, and has given up all selfish intentions, one is said to be established in yoga.

Uddhared atmanatmanam natmanam avasadayet

Lift yourself up by your own self; do not let yourself sink. For the self alone is one’s own friend, and the self alone is one’s own enemy.

Bandhur atmatmanas tasya yenatmaivatmana jitah
Anatmanas tu shatrutve vartetatmaiva shatru-vat
For one who has mastered the self by the self, the self is a friend. But for one who has not, the self acts like an enemy.
Jitatmanah prashantasya paramatma samahitah
Shitoshna-sukha-duhkheshu tatha manapamanayoh
For one who has mastered the self and is at peace, the Supreme Self stays steady in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour.

Jnana-vijnana-triptatma kuta-stho vijitendriyah
Yukta ityuchyate yogi sama-loshtashma-kanchanah
The yogi who is content with knowledge and realisation, unshaken, master of the senses, and to whom a lump of earth, a stone and gold are the same, is called steady.

Suhrin-mitraryudasina-madhyastha-dveshya-bandhushu
Sadhushvapi cha papeshu sama-buddhir vishishyate
Better still is one who looks with an equal mind on well-wishers, friends, enemies, the indifferent, the neutral, the hateful and relatives, on the good and on wrongdoers alike.
How to meditate 6.10–6.23

A yogi should keep the mind steadily on the self, staying in a quiet place, alone, with mind and body controlled, free of expectation and possessiveness.

calm and free of fear, firm in the vow of self-discipline, controlling the mind, thinking of me, one should sit steady, with me as the highest aim.

Always keeping the mind steady in this way, the yogi with a controlled mind reaches the peace that rests in me, the supreme peace of nirvana.

Yoga is not for one who eats too much or for one who does not eat at all, nor for one who sleeps too much or one who stays awake too long, Arjuna.

Yuktahara-viharasya yukta-cheshtasya karmasu

For one who is balanced in eating and recreation, balanced in effort at work, and balanced in sleep and waking, yoga takes away sorrow.

Yada viniyatam chittam atmanyevavatishthate
Nihsprihah sarva-kamebhyo yukta ityuchyate tada
When the disciplined mind rests in the self alone, free of longing for any desire, then one is said to be steady in yoga.

Yatha dipo nivata-stho nengate sopama smrita
Yogino yata-chittasya yunjato yogam atmanah
“Like a lamp in a windless place that does not flicker”: this is the image used for the yogi whose mind is controlled and who practises yoga of the self.

Yatroparamate chittam niruddham yoga-sevaya

When the mind, held back by the practice of yoga, comes to rest, and when, seeing the self by the self, one is content in the self,

when one knows that boundless happiness which is grasped by the intellect and lies beyond the senses, and, established there, never moves from the truth,

Yam labdhva chaparam labham manyate nadhikam tatah
Yasmin sthito na duhkhena gurunapi vichalyate
having gained which one thinks no other gain is greater, and established in which one is not shaken even by great sorrow,

know that this release from contact with sorrow is called yoga. This yoga should be practised with determination and a mind that does not lose heart.
Steadying the mind, seeing the same everywhere 6.24–6.32

Sankalpa-prabhavan kamans tyaktva sarvan asheshatah

Giving up completely all desires born of selfish intention, and holding back all the senses on every side with the mind alone,
Shanaih shanair uparamed buddhya dhriti-grihitaya
Atma-sanstham manah kritva na kinchid api chintayet
one should slowly, slowly come to rest, with an understanding held firm by patience; fixing the mind on the self, one should think of nothing else.

Yato yato nishcharati manash chanchalam asthiram
Tatas tato niyamyaitad atmanyeva vasham nayet
Wherever the restless, unsteady mind wanders off, from there one should draw it back and bring it under the control of the self.

Prashanta-manasam hyenam yoginam sukham uttamam

Supreme happiness comes to the yogi whose mind is at peace, whose restlessness is stilled, who is free of fault and has become one with Brahman.
Yunjann evam sadatmanam yogi vigata-kalmashah
Sukhena brahma-sansparsham atyantam sukham ashnute
Always keeping the mind steady in this way, the yogi, free of faults, easily enjoys the boundless happiness of contact with Brahman.
Sarva-bhuta-stham atmanam sarva-bhutani chatmani
Ikshate yoga-yuktatma sarvatra sama-darshanah
One whose self is joined in yoga sees the self in all beings and all beings in the self, seeing the same everywhere.
Yo mam pashyati sarvatra sarvam cha mayi pashyati
One who sees me everywhere and sees everything in me, I am never lost to them, and they are never lost to me.
Sarva-bhuta-sthitam yo mam bhajatyekatvam asthitah
Sarvatha vartamano ’pi sa yogi mayi vartate
The yogi who, established in oneness, worships me as dwelling in all beings, lives in me, however he may live.
Atmaupamyena sarvatra samam pashyati yo ’rjuna
Sukham va yadi va duhkham sa yogi paramo matah
Arjuna, one who, by comparing with oneself, sees the joy and sorrow of others as equal to one’s own, is thought to be the highest yogi.
The restless mind: practice and letting go 6.33–6.36
Arjuna said
Yo ’yam yogas tvaya proktah samyena madhusudana
Etasyaham na pashyami chanchalatvat sthitim sthiram
Madhusudana, this yoga of evenness that you have taught, I do not see how it can last, because the mind is so restless.
Chanchalam hi manah krishna pramathi balavad dridham
Tasyaham nigraham manye vayor iva su-dushkaram
For the mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, strong and stubborn. I think controlling it is as hard as controlling the wind.
Shri Krishna said
Asanshayam maha-baho mano durnigraham chalam
Abhyasena tu kaunteya vairagyena cha grihyate
No doubt, mighty-armed one, the mind is restless and hard to control. But it can be held, son of Kunti, by practice and by letting go of attachment.
Asanyatatmana yogo dushprapa iti me matih
Vashyatmana tu yatata shakyo ’vaptum upayatah
I hold that yoga is hard to reach for one who is not self-controlled. But one who has mastered the self and keeps striving can reach it by the right means.
What happens to one who falls from yoga? 6.37–6.47
Arjuna said

Ayatih shraddhayopeto yogach chalita-manasah

Krishna, what happens to one who has faith but does not strive enough, whose mind wanders from yoga before reaching its perfection? What end does such a person reach?

Mighty-armed one, fallen from both, without a footing and lost on the path to Brahman, does such a person not perish like a scattered cloud?

Etan me sanshayam krishna chhettum arhasyasheshatah

Krishna, you should remove this doubt of mine completely, for no one but you can remove it.
Shri Krishna said

Partha naiveha namutra vinashas tasya vidyate
Na hi kalyana-krit kashchid durgatim tata gachchhati
Son of Pritha, there is no ruin for such a person, either here or hereafter. No one who does good, my friend, ever comes to a bad end.

Reaching the worlds of the righteous and living there for many years, one who fell from yoga is born again in the home of the pure and prosperous.

Atha va yoginam eva kule bhavati dhimatam

Or else he is born in a family of wise yogis; but such a birth is very hard to gain in this world.

Tatra tam buddhi-sanyogam labhate paurva-dehikam

There he regains the understanding of his former life, and from there he strives again for perfection, joy of the Kurus.
Purvabhyasena tenaiva hriyate hyavasho ’pi sah

By that same past practice he is carried forward, even without trying. Even one who only wishes to know about yoga goes beyond the ritual words of the Vedas.
Prayatnad yatamanas tu yogi sanshuddha-kilbishah
Aneka-janma-sansiddhas tato yati param gatim
But the yogi who strives with effort, cleansed of faults and perfected over many births, then reaches the highest goal.

Tapasvibhyo ’dhiko yogi jnanibhyo ’pi mato ’dhikah
Karmibhyash chadhiko yogi tasmad yogi bhavarjuna
The yogi is greater than those who practise austerity, greater than the learned, and greater than those who perform rituals. So be a yogi, Arjuna.

Yoginam api sarvesham mad-gatenantar-atmana

And of all yogis, the one who worships me with faith, with the inner self absorbed in me, I consider the most united with me.
